The following is a compilation of all the hospital and health system strikes reported by Becker's Hospital Review as of June 8, starting with the most recent.
1. Hundreds of workers at Bellingham, Wash.-based PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center and its labs went on strike May 13 following a breakdown in negotiations over wages and health benefits for a three-year contract.
2. Thousands of nurses went on strike in Los Angeles and Northern California over patient care and staffing concerns. In the Los Angeles area, a two-day strike took place April 30 and May 1 at Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente's Los Angeles Medical Center. A one-day strike also took place May 1 at Providence Health and Services hospitals in Santa Monica and Torrance. In Northern California, RNs went on strike April 30 at five Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health facilities.
3. Some unionized physicians began a days-long walkout April 9, striking from their work at University of California student health centers. The Northern California strike included physicians at UC Berkeley, UCSF, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz and UC Merced. In Southern California, physicians at UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara walked off their jobs. The walkout came after the Union of American Physicians and Dentists, which represents about 150 part- and full-time physicians who staff the UC health centers, had accused UC of withholding financial information necessary to negotiate a contract. The same issue prompted a one-day walkout in January.
4. More than 100 licensed nurse practitioners and technicians at ACMH Hospital in Kittanning, Pa., went on strike over bad faith bargaining and unfair labor practices.
5. Hundreds of Kaiser Permanente Hawaii workers began picketing at the Moanalua Medical Center in Honolulu to kick off a strike scheduled to last six days.
6. Psychologists, therapists, psychiatric nurses and social workers affiliated with Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente walked out Jan. 12, beginning a weeklong strike to protest what they consider insufficient staffing.
