LSU Hospitals Laid Off 2,340 Employees Last Year

A report released by the Louisiana Civil Service Commission last week found that the hospitals within Baton Rouge-based Louisiana State University Health Care Services Division laid off 2,340 employees in the 2012-13 fiscal year, which ended June 30, according to a Times Picayune report.

Overall, the state laid off 3,805 workers, which was less than the 6,270 the state targeted. The mass privatization of LSU's hospitals represented a majority of those layoffs, and the biggest round of layoffs occurred at Interim LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans, with 1,060 people let go in the past year.

Here are the numbers of layoffs by each hospital, based on the CSC's report.

•    Interim LSU Public Hospital (New Orleans): 1,060
•    Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center (Houma): 384
•    Earl K. Long Medical Center (Baton Rouge): 323
•    University Medical Center (Lafayette): 315
•    W.O. Moss Regional Medical Center (Lake Charles): 165
•    Bogalusa Medical Center (Bogalusa): 30
•    Lallie Kemp Medical Center (Independence): 30
•    E.A. Conway Medical Center (Monroe): 23
•    Huey P. Long Medical Center (Pineville): 10

In June, LSU finalized several major portions of its privatization plan, including the closure of W.O. Moss Regional.
