Henry Mayo nurses cancel planned strike

Registered nurses at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia, Calif., have called off their strike that was scheduled to begin Sept. 3, according to a Santa Clarita Valley Signal report.

The nurses were striking to draw attention to a long-running labor dispute with the hospital, according to the report. The RNs wanted to continue to be able to file class-action lawsuits against the hospital, while the hospital management wanted it spelled out in the collective agreement that the nurses cannot do so, meaning nurses would agree to be subject to binding arbitration, according to the Santa Clarita Valley Signal.

The strike was cancelled after hospital administrators notified the nurses they would modify contract language on the issue of class action suits and binding arbitration. Details of the language "modification" over the right to file class-action lawsuits will be discussed Monday as contract talks continue, hospital spokesman Patrick Moody said, according to the report.

The 650 nurses at Henry Mayo Newhall have been working without a contract since Jan. 22.
