Nearly half — 48 percent — of nursing jobs go unfilled for an average of six weeks, according to a recent CareerBuilder survey, conducted by Harris Interactive.
Additionally, at 20 percent of healthcare organizations, nursing jobs often remain vacant for 12 weeks.
There are a variety of reasons recruiting nurses is so difficult, according to the survey. The following are the top four reasons healthcare employers cited as barriers to hiring nurses:
• The need to hire experienced nurses, as opposed to new graduates: 24 percent
• The need to hire nurses trained in a specialized area: 22 percent
• Unable to offer competitive compensation: 19 percent
• A lack of graduates with nursing degrees: 11 percent
Survey data is based on responses from 216 healthcare hiring managers and human resources professionals.
