United Postal Service will provide ground delivery services on Saturdays in various markets across the country, reports USA Today.
The company will roll out the service in large metropolitan areas starting in April. The Saturday ground service will reach more than half of U.S. residents in 2017, Myron Gray, president of U.S. operations for UPS, said Tuesday during an investor conference in New York City.
The strategy will help UPS "free up more ground capacity during the first half of the week," said CEO David Abney, according to the report. "That expands our delivery capacity with no incremental capital investment. It also maintains the flexibility to take advantage of new opportunities that come our way."
The delivery expansion will add an additional $100 million to $200 million in annual operating costs for the company. UPS competitors like FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service already offer similar services, according to the report.
