Stool softeners recalled over bacterial contamination

Livonia, Mich.-based Rugby Laboratories is recalling its Diocto liquid and Diocto syrup stool softener products over a risk of bacterial contamination.

The products, manufactured by PharmaTech, may contain Burkholderia cepacia bacteria, which are often resistant to common antibiotics, according to the CDC. At-risk patients — such as those with compromised immune systems — who ingest a product containing the bacteria could develop serious or life-threatening infections.

The FDA notified Rugby of the potential contamination after receiving several reports of B. cepacia infections in patients that may be linked to Diocto liquid or Diocto syrup. Rugby is working with the agency to notified distributors and customers of the recall and arrange for the return of all affected products.
