OptumRx, CVS Pharmacy form strategic partnership: 4 takeaways

Chicago-based OptumRx will partner with Woonsocket, R.I.-based CVS Pharmacy to develop a new pharmacy network solution. Through the strategic partnership, the companies hope to provide more medication options and lower costs for consumers and clients.

Here are four things to know about the partnership.

1. OptumRx — UnitedHealth Group's free-standing pharmacy care services business — manages more than 1 billion prescriptions every year. CVS Pharmacy, a division of CVS Health, contains more than 9,600 pharmacies across the country.

2. Through the new pharmacy network, all eligible Optum Rx members will have the option to fill 90-day prescriptions at prices equal to home delivery co-pay levels at any CVS location in the country or through OptumRx home delivery.

3. OptumRx and CVS Pharmacy will also use the shared pharmacy platform to develop and produce new pharmacy and health solutions.

4. OptumRx's commercial clients can implement the new 90-day prescription benefits program beginning July 1, 2017.
