Mylan pushes back release date of generic EpiPen

A Mylan spokeswoman said the company's generic EpiPen may not be available until the end of 2016, according to Bloomberg.

In an Aug. 29 statement, the Canonsburg, Pa.-based drugmaker said it expected to launch its generic EpiPen "in several weeks." However, the launch has been delayed by several months.

"We expect to launch this year once we have assured that sufficient inventory will be available to meet anticipated orders, created the necessary packaging for the product and created the necessary labeling for the product," Mylan spokeswoman Nina Devlin told Bloomberg Monday in an email. "We are diligently working to complete these efforts in order to provide the generic as soon as possible."

Mylan announced plans to launch a generic EpiPen in late August in response to heated scrutiny over the cost of EpiPens, which has increased by more than 400 percent since 2007. A two-pack of EpiPens has a list price of $608. The generic version will cost $300 for a pack of two.
