5 new medical device companies to know

Innovative medical device companies and products are constantly advancing the healthcare industry.

Here are five new medical device companies to know:

  1. PhotoniCare's ClearView device uses an advanced light-based technology to see through the eardrum and into the middle ear, offering a non-invasive method that eliminates the guesswork surrounding ear infection diagnosis. The Champaign, Ill.-based company hopes to expand into other areas of pediatric diagnostics, as their research has shown potential to use the same technology for eye, skin and oral activity.

  2. NERv develops implantable biosensors that monitor patient health from within the body, collecting data for physicians and identifying any complications after the procedure. The company, based at the Waterloo Institute of Nanotechnology in Ontario, hopes to replace large medical equipment with their small, biocompatible sensors to update health teams about patient status without extra time and effort.

  3. Redox helps health systems manage their connections to cloud-based applications, opening up the possibility of interoperability. The Madison, Wis.-based startup works with current EHRs to speed up integration projects and give physicians secure access to the critical information they need.

  4. Blumio, based in San Francisco, seeks to redefine the way patients' vitals are taken. They developed a stick-on sensor that uses radar technology to continuously measure blood pressure over a whole day. While the company hasn't launched the product yet, they hope to sell the device for $200 to $400 in 2017.

  5. DreamUp Vision, based in Paris, France, offers an early detection method to prevent blindness associated with diabetic retinopathy. The startup developed a cognitive learning engine that uses big data analysis to take a photo of the retina and detect tiny changes that determine early stages of retinopathy.
