The Leapfrog Group released the fall 2016 edition of its Hospital Safety Grade on Monday, and 844 hospitals earned the highest grade of an A.
Leapfrog assigned letter grades to 2,633 hospitals this fall, using its peer-reviewed, fully transparent methodology.
In spring 2016, Vermont had the highest percentage of hospitals earn an A grade, but the state was displaced this fall by Hawaii, which didn't even crack the top 10 earlier this year.
Other states have also made strides: North Carolina was No. 19 in the country in spring 2013, and now sits at No. 5. Additionally, Idaho moved from No. 45 in the U.S. in spring 2013 to No. 2 this fall.
Here are the 10 states with the highest percentage of hospitals that earned an A grade from Leapfrog this fall.
1. Hawaii — 66.7 percent of hospitals earned an A (eight out of 12)
2. Idaho — 63.6 percent (seven out of 11)
3. Maine — 62.5 percent (10 out of 16)
4. Wisconsin — 61.4 percent (35 out of 57)
5. North Carolina — 55.1 percent (43 out of 78)
6. Utah — 52.2 percent (12 out of 23)
7. Massachusetts — 51.7 percent (12 out of 23)
8. Vermont — 50 percent (three out of six)
9. Oregon — 48.5 percent (16 out of 33)
10. Virginia — 47 percent (31 out of 66)
