NPSF announces extraordinary nursing award honorees

The National Patient Safety Foundation and the DAISY Foundation have announced the individual and team recipients of the NPSF's DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

The new national award — which places special emphasis on patient and workplace safety — was derived from the DAISY Foundation's signature extraordinary nurses program. Through the program, DAISY awards for extraordinary nurses have been given to more than 1,900 healthcare facilities in all 50 states and in 14 other countries.

The winners of this year's NPSF DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses are:

Michael Blomquist, RN. Mr. Blomquist is a critical care nurse and unit coordinator in the medical ICU at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City. He developed a Rapid Response Team Boot Camp at the hospital to help new members understand their roles, standards of care and resources available. The individual award will recognize Mr. Blomquist's professionalism and patient-centered approach.

The Emory University Hospital Serious Communicable Disease Unit nursing and interdisciplinary team. The Atlanta hospital's nursing and interdisciplinary team will receive the team award for the risky and complicated work they did to care for critically ill Ebola patients. Members of the team include critical care and medical surgical nurses and a host of interdisciplinary colleagues. On top of the direct patient care the team provided, they compiled a list of their safety protocols and posted them on a public website for providers to download. Nearly 20,000 providers have downloaded the protocols thus far.

The winners this year were chosen from nurses who had received the DAISY Award within their organizations in 2013 or 2014. The awards will be presented at the 17th annual NPSF Patient Safety Congress in Austin, Texas, between April 29 and May 1.
