Legionella detected in Memphis VA hospital cooling system

Higher than acceptable levels of the bacteria responsible for Legionnaire's disease have been found in a water cooling tower at the Memphis VA Medical Center in Tennessee.

An internal document obtained by Fox 13 in Memphis, Tenn., revealed the bacteria were initially detected on Aug. 17. There have been no known cases of patients contracting Legionella at the medical center. Hospital administrators told Fox the instance was not a threat to patients and promised to give more information about the medical center's policies on notifying patients and staff at a later date.
