CMS awarded 155 hospitals five-star-ratings on its Hospital Compare website after its December patient experience survey update, according to the Advisory Board.
The agency first released hospital ratings in April and has updated ratings based on new Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems data in July, October and now December.
CMS rated 3,542 eligible hospitals based on the 11 publicly reported measures on patient experiences in the HCAHPS. Hospitals must have at least 100 completed patient surveys over a four-quarter period and be eligible for public reporting of HCAHPS measures to receive a star rating.
Below are six key statistics on how the Medicare-certified acute care hospitals fared:
1. In total, CMS awarded 155 hospitals five stars.
2. CMS awarded 1,173 hospitals four stars.
3. CMS awarded 1,510 hospitals three stars.
4. CMS awarded 633 hospitals two stars.
5. CMS awarded 71 hospitals one star.
6. CMS made the least number of updates to the five-star and one-star hospital categories.
