The CDC has issued new, clarified guidelines regarding personal protective equipment for those caring for suspected and confirmed Ebola patients.
The clarifications are based on feedback the CDC received from healthcare facilities on the guidelines it originally posted in October 2014. The new guidance addresses the use of fluid-resistant and impermeable gowns and coveralls and also provides specifications to assist healthcare facilities in selecting and ordering the garments.
Other updates made to the guidelines include:
- Expanding the rationale for respiratory protection
- Suggesting a designated PPE doffing assistant or "buddy"
- Changing the order of boot cover removal
- Emphasizing the important of cleaning the floor and works surfaces frequently
