CDC: Healthcare facilities need to immediately review medical device cleaning procedures

In a recent Health Alert Network message, the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration urge healthcare provider organizations to immediately review their current medical device reprocessing practices to make sure they comply with manufacturer instructions and with current standards and guidelines.

"Healthcare facilities should arrange for a healthcare professional with expertise in device reprocessing to immediately assess their reprocessing procedures," the HAN message reads.

The CDC and the FDA also recommend that healthcare provider organizations train all personnel who reprocess medical devices, regularly audit adherence to reprocessing steps and provide feedback to personnel regarding their adherence.

The HAN message also offers guidance on infection control policies and procedures hospitals should implement when it comes to reprocessing medical devices.
