CDC, FDA & certain states investigate E. coli outbreak

The CDC, FDA and a number of states are investigating an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli. Thus far, 12 cases have been identified in several states.

The agencies believe that I. M. Healthy brand SoyNut Butter products might be contaminated and are a likely source of this outbreak. The CDC recommends that people avoid products.

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli causes varied symptoms, including severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that can be bloody and vomiting. Typically, those infected recover within one week, but in come cases the infection can turn deadly. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.

The CDC recommends contacting a healthcare provider if a person is suffering from diarrhea that lasts more than three days or is accompanied by high fever, bloody stool or severe vomiting.
