The Environmental Protection Agency has ordered biomedical research firm sBioMed to immediately stop the sale, use or removal of pesticide products labeled as effective against Clostridium difficile, according to an AHA News Now report.
The EPA told the AHA's Association for the Healthcare Environment that recent testing gives the agency reason to believe sBioMed's Steriplex SD Part A and Steriplex SD Activator Part B products are "misbranded pesticides" and are not effective against C. diff, as advertised.
The order requires sBioMed to voluntarily recall the products from the market until the compliance issues can be resolved.
EPA officials also recommend hospitals and healthcare facilities that use these pesticides "find alternative EPA-registered products which control [C. diff]."
