Mumps may be making a comeback: In 2016, more than 5,000 people across more than 40 states and the District of Columbia were infected with mumps, marking a 10-year national high in cases of the vaccine-preventable infectious disease. And through Feb. 25 of this year, the CDC has already reported more than 1,000 cases of the mumps across 37 states and the District of Columbia.

1. 29 mumps cases confirmed at Southeast Missouri State University
Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau is experiencing a mumps outbreak that has sickened 29 people since February, according to a report from the Southeast Missourian.
2. Washington mumps outbreak tops 550, spreads to UW
The Washington State Department of Health on March 8 increased its tally of mumps cases associated with an ongoing outbreak to 563. The new count marks a 60-case increase from the 503 total reported on Feb. 22.
3. Mumps 'cluster' now officially mumps 'outbreak' at Chicagoland high school
Lake County Health Department officials on March 7 categorized the previously identified "cluster" of mumps infections in Barrington (Ill.) High School as an "outbreak1" with three confirmed cases and dozens more suspected.
4. 27 mumps cases detected at a single Texas high school
Dallas County Health and Human Services has detected 27 cases of the mumps among teachers and students at Cedar Hill (Texas) High School.
5. Mumps cases approach record high in Colorado
Colorado health officials reported 49 cases of the mumps through the month of February.
6. Mumps spreads to second NHL team: 2 Wild players isolated
Jason Pominville and Zach Parise of the NHL's Minnesota Wild were diagnosed with the mumps, according to a team statement released Feb. 27.
7. Possible mumps outbreak hits NHL's Canucks
Troy Stecher, a defenseman for the NHL's Vancouver Canucks, was diagnosed with mumps in February. Three other players on the team also displayed symptoms of the virus.
