5 things to know about upcoming Patient Safety Awareness Week

Patient Safety Awareness Week, led by the National Patient Safety Foundation, is set to kick off next month.

"We have a lot of exciting activity planned, and we are hoping to see large numbers of healthcare organizations, health professionals and members of the public get involved," said Tejal K. Gandhi, MD, president and CEO of NPSF. "This is a time for all of us to share what we know, learn from others and celebrate the real victories, large and small, that we've seen in patient safety over the past 20 years."

Here are five things to know about Patient Safety Week 2017.

1. It will be observed March 12-18.

2. On Tuesday, March 14, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Eastern time, NPSF will host a Twitter chat on patient safety. Governmental, advocacy and professional organizations are slated to participate. Anyone may join by using the hashtag #psaw17chat.

3. On Wednesday, March 15, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern time, NPSF will host a complimentary webcast, during which Dr. Gandhi will moderate a panel featuring speakers Marshall Allen, reporter for ProPublica; Rosemary Gibson, senior advisor at the Hastings Center; and Martin J. Hatlie, president and CEO of Project Patient Care. To register for the free program, click here.

4. Over the course of the week, interested parties are encouraged to make displays of solidarity on social media by posting photos of themselves in hospital gowns or in patient care settings using the hashtag #WeAreAllPatients.

5. NPSF will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2017. This will be the 15th year the organization has led Patient Safety Awareness week.
