Nowadays, patients want a greater say in their care, as well as more meaningful dialogues with their physicians and clinicians, according to James Merlino, MD, co-chair of the National Quality Forum's Person- and Family-Centered Care Standing Committee.
"NQF's work in the area of person- and family-centered care is an important step toward measuring and improving care that truly engages and partners with patients — for better care and better health," said Dr. Merlino.
Three ways NQF is supporting this shift to person- and family-centered care include:
- Examining and endorsing person- and family-centered care measures.
- Creating standards to help guide conversations between patients, families and clinicians.
- Helping develop measures that assess patient-reported outcomes.
The NQF Person- and Family-Centered Care Standing Committee is hosting a conference call on Wednesday to discuss how to evaluate care measures. The call, which will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET, is open to the public.
