200 college students sickened with norovirus in Toronto

Approximately 200 students at Humber College in Toronto have reported symptoms indicative of norovirus infection such as vomiting and abdominal pain, according to a Sunday update from college health officials.

The Toronto Department of Public Health is currently investigating the illnesses and said the cluster of infections supports the diagnosis of norovirus, according to the Toronto Sun. Humber College health officials enhanced environmental cleaning efforts and encouraged the campus population to practice good hygiene and stay home if experiencing symptoms.

Dr. Michael Finkelstein, an associate medical officer of health with the Toronto health department, told the Sun the city did not detect any major health issues when conducting tests in the cafeteria of one of the college's residence halls.

"Over the last 24 hours we have seen less students reporting illness, which is a good sign," said Dr. Finkelstein.
