Suspect in custody after active shooter alert sends Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center into lockdown

Police have taken an unidentified suspect into custody following reports of an active shooter in the Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, which caused the hospital to evacuate and go on lockdown Tuesday afternoon.

The Lebanon Police Department is investigating what it described as a 'serious incident' at the academic medical center, which was reported at roughly 1:30 p.m. EST. A person believed to be involved in the incident was taken into police custody by 2:57 p.m. EST.

The active-shooter alert forced authorities to issue evacuation and shelter-in-place orders. Schools in the area were also placed on lockdown. Witnesses described a "massive police response" of heavily-armed officers on the health system campus, according to the Union Leader

There was no confirmation of a shooting or injuries at the time of this story's publication. It is not clear if the lockdown has been lifted.

This report will be updated as additional information is available.
