A 61-year-old man who was taken to a hospital after he was involved in a traffic crash shot and killed himself in the hospital's emergency room, according to Naples Daily News.
The shooting occurred Tuesday evening after Webster, Fla., resident William Adams turned in front of another vehicle and was injured, according to a statement from Florida highway patrol Sgt. Steve Gaskin. A medic crew treated Mr. Adams on the scene before taking him to nearby Brooksville (Fla.) Regional Hospital.
A nurse discovered Mr. Adams in the emergency room suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Physicians were unable to resuscitate him.
No one else was injured in the shooting.
Investigators found a volume of hydrocodone and other pills in Mr. Adams' care, according to Sgt. Gaskins. However, the traffic report indicated troopers did not suspect drug or alcohol use was a factor in the crash, according to Tampa Bay Times.
Hernando County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the tragedy.
