Suspect found dead in Nevada hospital after police standoff

MountainView Hospital in Las Vegas was locked down early Sunday morning after a man believed to be armed entered the emergency room and barricaded himself inside a restroom, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Police arrived at the hospital shortly after 1:00 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of an armed individual on the first floor of MountainView Hospital. The man, whose name has not been released, entered the hospital's ER and holed up inside a restroom.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police brought in special weapons, tactics negotiators and crisis management personnel who attempted to persuade the man to surrender. However, the man hanged himself inside the bathroom and died at the scene, Metropolitan Police Lt. David Gordon told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The west side of MountainView Hospital's first floor was evacuated during the incident and the hospital was placed on lockdown. The lockdown was lifted around 10:00 a.m. Sunday, and the ER was reopened about an hour later.

In a Facebook post Sunday, MountainView Hospital officials expressed gratitude to those who responded to the incident. "Thank you to our wonderful MountainView team and Metro during this difficult situation. Everyone was responsive, proactive, cooperative, safe."
