Duke University Hospital nurses plan patient's in-hospital wedding

Heidi Fisk and Jerremie Duncan married each other Tuesday in a ceremony in a unique location under unusual circumstances — Ms. Fisk was hospitalized, and the couple wed outside of Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

Ms. Fisk suffers from a kidney disease that can cause kidney failure. Despite prior attempts to set a wedding date, her condition forced the couple to postpone the wedding several times.

When the couple decided to get married at the hospital this month, the nursing staff at Duke snapped into action to make the nuptials happen. They obtained the marriage license, brought in cake and arranged for the hospital's chaplain to officiate. They even did Ms. Fisk's hair, brought in jewelry for her to wear and decorated her room, according to the News Observer.

"I sat and watched that ceremony and thought there's nothing they can't do," nursing manager Vonda Capps told WNCN of the nursing staff. "It talks about their heart and that they are true caregivers; they are living our mission of giving [and] caring for our patients."

Duke University Hospital streamed the wedding live on Facebook. See the video below.
