Bon Secours St. Francis patient arrested for assaulting nurses, staff

A patient being treated at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, S.C., was arrested after he assaulted 14 nurses and other hospital staff members, according to a WCSC report.

The patient yelled and threw ice at a nurse, who then ran out of the room. Another nurse called the police. Then the patient left the room and ran through the hospital's halls, then hit a nurse, swung restraints with metal hooks on them at people in the hallway and otherwise assaulted other people in the vicinity, according to the report.

In a statement issued to WCSC, the hospital's director of corporate communications said the hospital staff had two goals during the outburst: to protect patients and staff and restrain the aggressive patient quickly. "Because of the heroic efforts of our staff, we are able to accomplish both," the statement reads.

Also, according to the statement, injured staff members were treated at the hospital and released that night, and the hospital has opened an investigation into the event to see if there is anything to learn.
