A 54-year-old man who posed as a cosmetic surgeon was sentenced Aug. 8 to 38 years and three months in prison, according to a press release from Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich.
Gustavo Nunez, the physician imposter, performed illegal liposuction procedures on nine women in Tucson, Ariz., between 2012 and 2014. Three of the women had to be hospitalized after receiving the procedures and one victim sustained life-threatening injuries.
Mr. Nunez was arrested in August 2013 after local hospitals treated two women for aggressive infections stemming from procedures Mr. Nunez performed. An investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration revealed Mr. Nunez had no medical training and was not a physician.
In April, Mr. Nunez pleaded guilty to 28 felony charges.
"Gustavo Nunez represents the worst type of criminal. One who preyed upon women in our communities and most certainly deserves the sentence handed to him today," said Doug Coleman, special agent in charge of DEA in Arizona.
