The HHS Office of Inspector General has released several reports this week outlining how three hospitals did not comply with certain Medicare billing requirements.
The OIG's audits covered Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, Calif., Boston Medical Center and The Brooklyn (N.Y.) Hospital Center. The OIG found Community Regional Medical Center inaccurately billed Medicare $1.08 million. Boston Medical Center and The Brooklyn Hospital Center erroneously billed Medicare $612,063 and $544,783, respectively.
Most of the errors at all three hospitals came on the inpatient side. Community Regional Medical Center and The Brooklyn Hospital Center agreed with the OIG's findings. They said they will repay the overpayment amounts and strengthen their Medicare billing processes.
Boston Medical Center officials said they agreed with the OIG's findings for incorrectly billing outpatient services, but the hospital plans to work with a vendor to determine if it should appeal certain inpatient claims.
