Former Payroll Director at Grady Memorial Hospital Faces Embezzlement Charges

A former payroll director at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta was indicted by a federal grand jury Monday for allegedly embezzling more than $450,000 in public funds, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report.

Donald Thomas faces claims of using his access to the hospital's payroll system to fabricate vacation and severance pay issued to terminated Grady employees. The U.S. Attorney's Office alleges Mr. Thomas altered payroll records so those payments were deposited directly into accounts he oversaw.

Mr. Thomas was laid off from Grady in 2011.

Mr. Thomas faces charges of embezzlement, wire fraud and bank fraud. He was released on bond Tuesday. He faces up to 30 years in prison and a potential fine of $1 million.
