83-year-old patient checks out of NY hospital, steals ambulance

An elderly man was arrested Tuesday after police say he signed himself out of Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, N.Y., and then stole an ambulance, according to CBS New York.

Authorities say 83-year-old Donald Winkler checked himself out of Nassau University Medical Center Tuesday around 1:00 a.m. after becoming upset with the care he was receiving.

Mr. Winkler exited the hospital through the emergency room, and there was a Nassau County Police ambulance with the keys in the ignition in the parking lot. He drove off in the ambulance and was caught by police at a 7-Eleven a short time later, according to the report.

Mr. Winkler admitted taking the ambulance. He was arrested and taken back to Nassau University Medical Center for evaluation. He is charged with second degree grand larceny, according to the report.
