1. Physician receives 45-year sentence for administering chemotherapy to healthy patients
Farid Fata, MD, a Detroit-area hematologist-oncologist, was sentenced to 45 years in prison for administering unnecessary chemotherapy to healthy patients to enable him to fraudulently bill Medicare and private payers for the treatment.
2. Chicago hospital kickback scheme leads to another conviction
A Chicago podiatrist, Shanin Moshiri, DPM, was convicted of accepting $2,000 in monthly kickbacks from now-shuttered Sacred Heart Hospital in Chicago in exchange for referrals.
3. Tuomey Healthcare loses appeal, ordered to pay $237M judgment
Sumter, S.C.-based Tuomey Healthcare System must pay the $237 million judgment previously entered against it in a False Claims Act case after a three-judge panel of the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously upheld the district court's ruling.
4. Parkview ponies up $800K following HIPAA violation
Seventy-one unattended cardboard boxes, sitting unassumingly just 20 feet from a public road, resulted in a HIPAA Privacy rule settlement — including $800,000 in fines — for Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Parkview Health System. The boxes, which contained the medical records of between 5,000 and 8,000 patients, were abandoned in the driveway of a physician's home.
5. California hospital sues HHS over Medicare appeals
Casa Colina Hospital and Centers for Healthcare, a rehabilitation hospital based in Pomona, Calif., filed a lawsuit against HHS requesting the agency resolve Medicare appeals within 90 days of submission as required by federal law.
6. Naturopathic physicians sue Health Net over discriminatory practices
Naturopathic physicians filed a class-action lawsuit against Health Net and its plan administrator American Specialty Health Group alleging the insurer denied claims for medical services provided by the naturopathic physicians that would have been covered if other medical providers had administered the services.
7. Florida Hospital hit with two data breach lawsuits
Orlando-based Florida Hospital is facing two class-action lawsuits for separate data breaches that have occurred over the past four years.
