Promoting leadership from within hospitals comes with an array of challenges. A recent survey of hospital leaders published by The HealthCare Initiative, an affiliate of MRINetwork, reveals the primary obstacles to a successful internal promotion is the strain the promotion puts on existing employee relationships as well as the possibility that the new manager might not necessarily make a great leader.
Based on survey findings, THC recommends the following tips for successful internal hospital promotions.
1. Implement a mentorship program for the newly promoted leader with someone who has made a successful transition in his or her own organization.
2. Ensure the promotion is fully supported by the department and administration.
3. Subject the internal candidate through an identical interview process as an external candidate would be to make sure they fully understand and are prepared for every element of the new position.
4. Judge the candidate on past displays of leadership.
