Valley Hospital Medical Center and Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center, both in Las Vegas, have cut ties with Service Employees International Union Local 1107, hospital spokeswoman Gretchen Papez confirmed via email.
Both hospitals are owned and operated by a subsidiary of King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services. Valley Hospital cut ties with the union in February, while Desert Springs Hospital cut ties this month, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
In both instances, the hospitals indicated the majority of registered nurses at their respective institutes no longer wished to be represented by the union, the publication reports.
"Once again UHS, in its zeal to eliminate union representation from Desert Springs and Valley, has withdrawn recognition of the union without providing each nurse with an opportunity to be heard," Union President Cherie Mancini said in a statement on Monday. "SEIU Nevada represents a majority of nurses at Desert Springs and the hospital refuses to provide evidence of its unsubstantiated claims."
She added that the union has filed various unfair labor practice charges against UHS, which are pending with the National Labor Relations Board.
Ms. Papez did not provide any further comments to Becker's Hospital Review.
Nurses' union contracts at Desert Springs Hospital and Valley Hospital expired last May, according to the report.
