The University of Chicago Medicine finalized an agreement to merge with Harvey, Ill.-based Ingalls Health System. U. of C. Medicine officials said they hope the merger is just one of many in the next few years, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The deal reportedly did not involve a monetary transaction, according to the article.
Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs at U. of C. Medicine Kenneth Polonsky said the health system is also discussing potential affiliation options with a number of community hospitals. He did not disclose the names of any interested parties, according to the article.
U. of C. Medicine officials said they also expect to hire additional physicians to be primarily based at Ingalls, as well as to provide additional services for patients receiving care at the hospital.
Ingalls retains nearly 450 physicians and 473 beds. The 805-bed U. of C. Medicine maintains approximately 850 physicians and more than 1,100 residents and fellows.
