State approves merger of 2 UMass hospitals

The Massachusetts Public Health Council approved Worcester-based UMass Memorial Health Care's plan to merge two of its hospitals: Leominster, Mass.-based HealthAlliance Hospital and Clinton (Mass.) Hospital, according to Telegram & Gazette.

The council approved the merger Wednesday. The state Health Policy Commission declined to review the merger, making the council's decision final, according to the article.

As part of the agreement, Clinton Hospital President Lisa Colombo, RN, was named senior vice president for patient care services and CNO of UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, effective Jan. 19.

The health system declared its intent to merge the two hospitals in August 2016.
