Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare on Dec. 11 completed the $200 million sale of Alvarado Hospital Medical Center to UC San Diego Health.
Renamed UC San Diego Health East Campus Medical Center, the 302-bed facility offers a new emergency department, remodeled intensive care unit and expanded behavioral health services which the health system said it will continue to grow.
"We are proud of the care that has been provided at Alvarado and the legacy that will continue as UC San Diego Health expands access to specialized care, while preserving and building on Alvarado’s 50-year history," Kavitha Bhatia, MD, Prime Healthcare's chief medical officer of strategy, said.
Alvarado Hospital employs 800 with a medical staff of 300. Hospital staff immediately transitioned to UC San Diego Health employment, the health system said in a news release.
"Together, we start a new chapter to expand access to needed medical and surgical care in eastern San Diego," Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health, said in a news release. "This is a unique opportunity to create a more robust community-oriented model of care while increasing access to the nationally-recognized care of UC San Diego Health."
UC San Diego Health is one of five academic medical centers within the University of California. It is a 1,101-bed academic health system that includes UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, UC San Diego Health East Campus and Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla, Calif.
