HMA to Negotiate Acquisition of Tennessee's 7-Hospital Mercy Health Partners

Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates is in negotiations with Knoxville, Tenn.-based Mercy Health Partners, part of Cincinnati-based Catholic Health Partners, to acquire its seven hospitals, according to an HMA news release.

In a memorandum to Mercy boards, associates and physicians, MHP President and CEO Jeffrey A. Ashin revealed that HMA is in exclusive negotiations for the purchase of MHP. Although he previously planned to disclose the name of the company in the fall, Mr. Ashin said he sensed the uncertainty among leaders, physicians and associates was causing undue stress and distraction.

Mr. Ashin said HMA was chosen among several bidders for its recognition of Mercy's history of providing quality care; value of local leadership; and commitment to expanding physician relationships throughout the region, being good corporate citizens, making capital investments and continuing Mercy's values and mission.

MHP hopes to complete the transaction by this fall, according to the memorandum.
