The growing physician shortage makes for an intense hiring environment in healthcare, especially as more Americans gain access to care. The industry experienced strong employment growth in 2014 and this is only expected to continue in 2015, according to a recent report from Health eCareers.
Health eCareers polled 565 healthcare employers, including recruiters, hiring managers and human resource professionals from diverse practice settings, and found the following key statistics on hiring trends and challenges in healthcare.
- Survey respondents ranked turnover and the physician shortage as top concerns for hiring and recruiting in 2015.
- 73 percent of employers surveyed said they will have the same number or more job openings in 2015 than 2014.
- Respondents said physicians and surgeons are the most difficult hiring need, and more specifically family medicine, psychiatry, internal medicine and dermatology are the most difficult.
- 30.1 percent of respondents said they would use PAs or NPs as alternative candidates for difficult-to-fill physician positions.
- 20.5 percent said they would use travel or per diem staff.
- 5.3 percent said they would sponsor international healthcare workers.
- 45 percent said they don't use alternative candidates to fill physician positions.
