The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, the world's largest specialty nursing association, has announced new leadership and members of its board of directors for fiscal year 2016, effective July 1, 2015.
Here are 11 things to know about the new leadership and members, according to AACN.
Karen McQuillan, RN, is the new president of the AACN board of directors.
1. Ms. McQuillan is a clinical nurse specialist at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, part of University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore, a position she's held since 1987. She also holds a faculty associate position with University of Maryland School of Nursing in Baltimore.
2. Ms. McQuillan is an investigator, author and presenter on issues related to trauma and nursing. She has lectured on neurological and trauma topics at a number of regional, national and international conferences.
3. Ms. McQuillan served as lead editor for "Trauma Nursing: From Resuscitation Through Rehabilitation," 3rd and 4th editions.
Clareen Wiencek, RN, PhD, begins a one-year term as president-elect.
4. Dr. Wiencek is an associate professor of nursing at the University of Virginia School of Nursing in Charlottesville and coordinator of its Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program.
5. Dr. Wiencek has almost 40 years of experience as a bedside nurse in critical care, nurse manager, educator and researcher.
6. Prior to joining the faculty at UVA, Dr. Wiencek worked at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond for four years.
7. Dr. Wiencek held various research, staff nurse and management positions at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland for two decades before moving to Virginia.
Current board member Deborah Klein, RN, MSN, begins a one-year term as secretary.
8. Ms. Klein is a clinical nurse specialist at Cleveland Clinic, where she has worked since 2000.
9. Ms. Klein also is an adjunct faculty member at Kent State University School of Nursing in Ohio and a clinical instructor at Case Western Reserve University, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing in Cleveland.
Paula S. McCauley, DNP, also a current board member, begins a one-year term as treasurer.
10. Dr. McCauley is associate dean for academic affairs at University of Connecticut School of Nursing in Storrs.
11. Dr. McCauley has had a number of academic appointments including a joint clinical/faculty position for the accelerated registered nurse and graduate programs and track coordinator for the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program.
Joining the board as directors are Kimberly Curtin; Wendi Froedge, RN-BC, MSN; Michelle Kidd, RN; and Louise Saladino, RN, DNP. They each will serve a three-year term through June 30, 2018.
