The National Patient Safety Foundation and the DAISY Foundation have named the individual and team winners of the 2016 Awards for Extraordinary Nurses.
This is the second year of the international award program. Nurses who received the DAISY Award within their organization between January 2014 and June 2015 were eligible for the award, which has an emphasis on patient and workforce safety.
Rachel Whittaker, BSN, RN, a nurse from the Children's Hospital of Colorado in Aurora, won the individual award. She was chosen for her leadership, compassion, and practice of patient-centered care.
The Clinical Informatics Council at Albuquerque-based University of New Mexico Hospitals won the team award for its effect on the organization's EHR and patient safety, including designing an alert to prevent complications from ventilator use and a streamlined method to document wounds, among other efforts.
The honorees will receive their awards at the NPSF Patient Safety Congress in May.
