Raleigh-based North Carolina Children's Specialty Clinic, part of University of North Carolina Health Care in Chapel Hill, has dropped the name of a controversial donor: Krispy Kreme.
As reported by Vox, the clinic spent seven short months as the "Krispy Kreme Challenge Children's Specialty Clinic" for a commitment by a local charity run, the Krispy Kreme Challenge, to raise $2 million by 2020 for UNC Children's.
When the Center for Science in the Public Interest got wind of the new doughnut-inspired moniker, it started a petition calling on UNC to cut the sugary snack brand from the clinic's name, according to Vox. Fourteen thousand signatures later, the clinic is set to change its name.
The clinic will now be called the "NC State Park Scholars Children's Specialty Clinic," according to the report. Though CSPI director of nutrition policy Margo Wootan called the change "a good reminder" of the power of concerned citizens, a UNC spokesperson said the petition did not spur the change, according to Vox.
UNC communications representative Jennifer James told Vox the new name was inspired by a new commitment to raise $2 million from the Park Scholars, according to the report.
