Administrators at Miami-based Jackson Health System said the organization laid off fewer than 25 full-time employees in November, according to a Miami Herald report.
Here are four things to know.
1. JHS, one of Florida's largest safety-net hospitals for the indigent, cited uncertainty about future government funding for uninsured patients as the reason behind the layoffs, according to the report.
2. Employees affected by the layoffs were primarily in human resources and business development departments, Jennifer Piedra, a JHS spokeswoman, said in a written statement obtained by the Miami Herald.
"The work has been absorbed by other employees or otherwise handled within our existing resources," she said.
3. The layoffs come as JHS is reorganizing its non-clinical departments amid patient volume growth.
4. The Miami Herald cites Jackson financial statements, which, according to the report, show that for the fiscal year ending in September, the organization employed 11,820 full-time workers — about 683 positions over budget, and 750 more jobs than the prior year.
