HHS Secretary Burwell identifies 3 steps to universal health coverage

HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell told a roundtable of reporters immigration reform, marketplace growth and Medicaid expansion would help address much of remaining uninsured population, according to The Hill.

About 30 million remain uninsured, and about 4.9 million of those people are ineligible for health insurance because of immigration laws, according to Kaiser Family Foundation data cited in the report. An additional 3 million people are ineligible for coverage because their state did not expand Medicaid coverage and about 15 million are eligible but have not signed up for health insurance.

This year 12.7 million signed up for health coverage through the marketplaces, according to the report.

"I believe we have more work to do, but it [the marketplace] is stable," Ms. Burwell said.
