Sheldon Retchin, MD, resigned as CEO of Columbus, Ohio-based OSU Wexner Medical Center in May after public criticism from some of the hospital's top physicians, but he is still on the university's payroll as a senior adviser, according to the The Columbus Dispatch.
Dr. Retchin is contracted as senior adviser to the president for health policy for the next two years, after which time he will become a tenured professor in the College of Medicine. He is slated to earn a base salary of $500,00 per year with $600,000 annual contribution to his retirement plan, along with a possible 35 percent performance bonus.
As CEO of OSU Wexner, Dr. Retchin earned a $1.1 million base salary.
"Sheldon Retchin is a nationally recognized leader in healthcare policy," said university spokesman Chris Davey. "During his two-year administrative appointment, he will advise the university concerning the critical issues of health-care reform, Medicaid policy and data-driven improvements to health outcomes."
Dr. Retchin resigned in May after 25 physicians and professors from the OSU College of Medicine signed a letter of "no confidence" in Dr. Retchin and his executive team. Soon after, five senior members of the medical center's neurological institute wrote another letter voicing similar concerns.
