Millions of us witnessed the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history by the New England Patriots over the Atlanta Falcons.
And those who did not actually watch the game, surely heard and read about it the Patriots’ unlikely victory. It was a great, history-making game, for sure. But it was more than that.
Watching closely and imagining how the players from each team must have felt as they returned to the field after half time, it occurred to me that this game could serve as a metaphor for what we are facing in the healthcare industry right now.
Initially, I was thinking about the Falcons and how they had made huge gains in the first half, much like many hospitals and health systems have done over the past few years. But half time acts as a reset, as does an election, and now they were facing an uncertain future. The game could remain very much the same, or it could take a completely different turn. The job of the Falcons was to maintain their advantage, regardless of how the circumstances changed.
Like most viewers, I was confident that they would do so. But I was in for a surprise. And the entirely unexpected victory by the Patriots – through the leadership of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick – provided a much broader and more important lesson about the power of great leadership. I could not have scripted a better demonstration of how important it is to lead with deeper purpose, to lead one’s self before leading others, to lead with strategy by leveraging the unexpected and executing for results, 10 yards at a time.
