Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, MD, officially announced Monday in his hometown of Detroit that he's running for president in the upcoming 2016 election.

1. Dr. Carson, a Republican candidate, has called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act "the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery," according to CNN.
2. Dr. Carson believes there is a need to re-establish a strong and direct relationship between patients and their physicians.
3. Dr. Carson strongly supports health savings accounts, which he says "empower families to make their own decisions about their medical treatment."
4. Overall, Dr. Carson supports more freedom and less government involvement in healthcare.
