13 healthcare layoffs in May

The following healthcare layoffs were reported by Becker's Hospital Review in May. They are listed below, beginning with the most recent.

1. UW Medicine hospital cuts 60 jobs including COO, VPs
Renton, Wash.-based Valley Medical Center, part of Seattle-based UW Medicine, cut 60 positions, or about 1 percent of its total workforce.

2. Southeast Alabama Medical Center cuts 80 jobs as revenue trends downward
Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan cut 80 jobs to rein in costs.

3. University of Miami Hospital begins layoffs amid system restructuring
University of Miami Hospital is eliminating positions as part of the University of Miami Health System's efforts to restructure and move toward outpatient care.

4. Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton implements layoffs
Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton (Pa.) laid off an undisclosed number of employees.

5. South Shore Health eliminates 27 managerial, administrative jobs in cost-saving move
South Weymouth, Mass.-based South Shore Health System laid off 27 employees in management and administrative positions.

6. BCBS of North Carolina eliminates 165 jobs
Durham-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina will lay off 165 customer service employees who were hired during the 2017 open enrollment period for ACA health plans.

7. Spaulding to lay off 35 employees in cost-cutting move
Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, part of Boston-based Partners HealthCare System, will lay off 35 employees, or less than 1 percent of the organization's total workforce.

8. Texas medical center lays off 6 employees
Woodland Heights Medical Center in Lufkin, Texas, laid off six employees.

9. Louisiana specialty hospital cuts 14 jobs
Lafayette (La.) Surgical Specialty Hospital, a 20-bed physician-owned hospital, laid off 14 employees.

10. St. Mary's General Hospital to lay off 7 nurses, 13 medical techs
Passaic, N.J.-based St. Mary's General Hospital plans to lay off less than 3 percent of its workforce, mainly in nonclinical positions.

11. Banner completes restructuring; eliminates chief administrative officer post
Phoenix-based Banner Health completed a restructuring process involving layoffs and consolidation or elimination of certain executive positions.

12. 20 laid off at Stamford Health amid projected revenue shortfall
Stamford (Conn.) Health laid off approximately 20 employees, or about 0.7 percent of its total workforce.

13. CHS divestiture results in 19 layoffs at Stringfellow Memorial
The Health Care Authority of the City of Anniston let go approximately 19 employees at Anniston, Ala.-based Stringfellow Memorial Hospital following its recent acquisition of the 125-bed hospital.
