12 things to know about Becker's '100 great hospitals in America | 2017' list

Becker's Hospital Review's "100 great hospitals in America | 2017" list, published April 4, includes a range of hospitals from across the country — some large, historic academic centers and others newer entities with smaller bed counts.

The hospitals were selected for their excellence, innovation, quality patient care and clinical research. The Becker's editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion based on several rankings and awards, including U.S. News and World Report hospital rankings, CMS star ratings, Leapfrog grades, Truven Health Analytics top hospitals, Most Wired hospitals and Magnet accreditation.

Here are 12 things to know about the list's makeup:

1. Teaching hospitals: 76 percent
2. 100+ year-old hospitals: 52 percent
3. Hospitals opened since 1980: 10.8 percent
4. 1,000+ beds: 14.7 percent
