11 things to know about physician engagement & how hospitals can lose up to $460k

Physician burnout is increasing and hospitals failing to address the growing prevalence of physician disengagement could lose revenue and a dedicated workforce.  

Here are 11 things to know:

1. Fully engaged physicians gave hospitals 51 percent more inpatient referrals, according a Gallup poll.

2. Comparatively, the report found fully engaged physicians gave hospitals 3 percent more outpatient referrals.

3. Nearly three out of five employed physicians reported not being engaged, according to Advisory Board Company 2014 Medical Staff Engagement Benchmarks Report.

4. A Gallup study found engaged physicians were 26 percent more productive than physicians who reported minimal engagement. This figure is equivalent to an extra $460,000 on average in patient revenue for an individual physician per year.

5. The Advisory Board Company listed several drivers for physician engagement which include:

•    An organization's openness and responsiveness to physician input
•    Physicians fulfilling leadership positions
•    Having alignment between executive team actions and clinicians' goals
•    Freedom for physicians to manage individual practice
•    Supporting the organization's economic growth and physician's individual practice success

6. Forty percent more executives were involved in clinical decision making than physicians, according to Jackson Healthcare's "Physician Trends 2016 Report."

7. Jackson Healthcare's "Physician Trends 2016 Report" found almost 70 percent of hospital executives reported issues were resolved in both a fair and satisfactory manner, compared to approximately 36 percent of physicians expressing the same sentiments.

8. Almost 78 percent of executives reported their affiliated hospital treated physicians with respect, significantly more than 45 percent of physicians, according to Jackson Healthcare's "Physician Trends 2016 Report."

9. Sixty-five percent of executives reporting trusting their hospital leadership team, while nearly 38 percent of physicians reporting this level of trust, according to Jackson Healthcare's "Physician Trends 2016 Report."

10. A recent athenahealth found 46 percent of surveyed physicians experienced burnout in 2015.

11. The athenahealth survey also found half of surveyed physicians reported they would not recommend becoming physicians.
