Florida Rep. Dean Cannon, the state's new House speaker, took a shot at healthcare reform on his first day in the position, questioning whether government should require citizens to purchase health insurance or raise taxes to give insurance to those who can't afford it, according to an Orlando Sentinel report.
Republican resistance to healthcare reform is taking numerous forms in Florida, from challenges to the law in federal court to a constitutional amendment that would exempt Florida businesses and residents from having to purchase insurance — the latter of which was excluded from the November ballot for "misleading language."
Legislative leaders are poised to block spending, as well as rules necessary to implement the law. Gov.-elect Rick Scott has made it clear he doesn't want the state to assist the implementation of healthcare reform, according to the report.
